Iona Foster achieves high quality modern design to meet the specific needs and aspirations of her clients. Her designs optimise available natural daylight and often employ concrete and glass to achieve large clear spans and uncluttered interiors. Particular care and attention is given to consistent use of all materials and rigorous detailing. The projects reflect the requirements of contemporary living whilst having reference to permanent values which will stand the test of time. Sustainability and the need to minimise carbon costs are reflected in all projects. The design for the zero energy ‘off grid’ house at Knighton Down combines passive performance with the visual planning requirements of an area of outstanding natural beauty. Iona has been working in practice since 1989. She is experienced in the design of public, arts and educational buildings as well as in the remodelling of homes for private clients. Iona Foster collaborates with 5th Studio architects on projects in the educational sector and on masterplanning and urban planning. Current projects include the restoration and redevelopment of historic 14th century buildings for use by an Oxford College. Commitment to the design of public space and urban regeneration has involved working in consultation with groups such as in the Manor Community in Sheffield. The invention of specific techniques for developing a brief with children and other user groups was found to be fun for all and provided a useful documentation of their needs and frustrations.
