Verify before you hire

  • Check the Gas Safe Register (gassaferegister.co.uk) before any boiler, heating, or gas work: it's a legal requirement, not optional.
  • For water-fitting work (new bathroom, outdoor tap, stop tap), look for a WaterSafe-approved contractor at watersafe.org.uk: only vetted plumbers appear.
  • Confirm they have public liability insurance: APHC or CIPHE membership implies it; no trade body membership is a warning sign.
  • Unlike electricians or gas engineers, any person can legally call themselves a plumber: that's why checking WaterSafe, APHC, or CIPHE matters more here than in most trades.

Warning signs of a cowboy

  • Refuses to give a written quote or callout fee upfront: legitimate plumbers will tell you the rate before they start.
  • Cannot produce a Gas Safe ID card for boiler or heating work: this is a criminal offence, not a minor omission.
  • Demands a large cash deposit before doing any work, especially on an emergency call.
  • A recently created company with no verifiable reviews pressuring you to decide quickly.
