"I searched in Check a Trade for a damp proofer and within an hour David called me and arranged to come and check our property for us the next day. He came to check our property yesterday and straight away noticed that the issue was our outside wall which had to be repointed. He tested the inside walls too with an electric damp meter. He gave us a very reasonable quote for repointing the wall and even advised us on how to damp proof our property in the future. ( Always get gutters checked once a year, leave windows open during the day to air the house etc. ) I would definitely recommend David."

Led us to believe work would take some weeks and more would be done. We would strongly recommend getting a detailed estimate in writing before proceeding - our mistake and to our cost.
I searched in Check a Trade for a damp proofer and within an hour David called me and arranged to come and check our property for us the next day. Property Care Association members hold recognised damp-surveying qualifications (CSRT/CSSW), follow a code of ethics and must have traded at least three years. Check they're a PCA member before you accept a damp-treatment quote.
Check the PCA registerGet an INDEPENDENT damp survey — not a free one from the firm that wants to sell you the treatment. A free survey has every incentive to diagnose expensive 'rising damp', when the problem is often condensation, a leak, or high ground level that needs no chemical injection.
Insist they identify and fix the underlying CAUSE — a leak, blocked airbricks, poor ventilation, failed pointing — before agreeing to an injected damp-proof course, and ask them to explain why simpler fixes won't work.
Get the diagnosis and an itemised quote in writing, and be wary of pressure to sign on the spot for a long 'guarantee' that is only worth anything while that firm is still trading.
