I recently had some cherry trees pruned, a tree removed, a cypress shaped and a high and deep laurel hedge pruned back. I am very pleased with their work and would not hesitate to recommend them. Check they're listed before work starts near your home or power lines.

Check they carry public-liability insurance (commonly £2–5m) and ask to SEE the certificate — tree work is high-risk and damage to your property, a neighbour's, or a person is expensive to put right.

Before any felling or heavy pruning, check whether the tree is protected — a preservation order, a conservation area, or active bird nesting — because YOU, the homeowner, can be fined for unauthorised work, not just the contractor.

Get the scope in writing (which trees, how much to take off, and who removes the waste and grinds the stump), and never pay in full before the work is finished.
