"Dominic and his fellow worker did a great job. Top quality. It was also a real pleasure to work with him and to discuss how to progress the project. He's a really nice guy - and also the tidiest builder I've ever known! We had a mutual misunderstanding about one aspect of the job (some fault on both sides) which resulted in slightly higher than expected costs, but in fact Dominic did a great job of reusing materials where appropriate to keep costs down. I'm very pleased to recommend him to anyone."

I recently tried to use Dom (owner) for landscaping of my garden. Originally, Dom had to cancel the night before due to unforeseen circumstances. So we fixed another date in the diary. The week of this delayed date, I messaged and called Dom mult times to confirm. However, he never responded. I can see from his FB page he was doing other work that week, so just decided to shelve my job. Job was time critical, so 5 months for nothing is painful. I find his lack of clear and timely communication unacceptable. He seemed like a friendly character, but would not recommend at all.

Get an itemised quote that separates plants and materials, any machinery or skip hire, and labour — a vague 'garden makeover' lump sum hides where the money goes and makes extra charges easy to add later.
Be wary of paying a large sum up front 'for materials' — agree staged payments against work you can see completed, especially for hard landscaping like patios, decking, paving or driveways.
Tree work and anything near a boundary can be regulated — protected trees and conservation areas often need permission, and removing a protected tree can be an offence. Confirm what is allowed, and that they carry public-liability insurance, before work starts.
