How to judge an asbestos removal
Independent, no-ads guidance. The trade-specific checks that matter most, the warning signs, and what to ask before you hire. Use it alongside each trader’s public evidence above.
Verify before you hire
- In the UK the most dangerous asbestos work (licensed asbestos work) must be done by a contractor holding an HSE asbestos licence, and notified to the HSE at least 14 days before it starts. Verify the licence on the HSE's list of licence holders.
- For licensed work an independent UKAS-accredited analyst, not the removalist, must carry out air monitoring and a four-stage clearance before the area is reoccupied. Confirm this is included and that you receive the clearance certificate.
- Ask for the written plan of work / risk assessment the regulations require. Lower-risk jobs may be non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed work, but must still follow controlled, wet methods.
- Confirm asbestos liability insurance and that waste goes to a licensed facility with a consignment note you are given.
Warning signs of a cowboy
- Carrying out licensed asbestos work without an HSE licence, or no evidence the job was notified to the HSE 14 days ahead.
- Dry-sanding, drilling, or breaking asbestos materials rather than keeping them wet and using hand tools.
- No independent UKAS-accredited air monitoring or four-stage clearance after licensed work.
- No written plan of work, or no consignment note showing where the asbestos waste went.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Do you hold an HSE asbestos licence, and will this job be notified to the HSE 14 days before it starts?
- Which UKAS-accredited analyst carries out the air monitoring and four-stage clearance?
- Can I see your written plan of work and your asbestos insurance?
- Which licensed facility will the waste go to, and will I get the consignment note?
Frequently asked questions
- How do I choose a trustworthy asbestos removal?
- Compare the public evidence on each profile: how many independent reviews they have and across how many named sources, the rating and how recent it is, any credential evidence, and the company status. An asbestos removal backed by several named sources is harder to fake than one found in only one place.
- Does MyTrustedTraders rank or recommend asbestos removals for payment?
- No. There are no ads and no paid placement. Asbestos removals are ranked only by the strength of independent public evidence. No one can pay to rank higher, add a badge, or change their reviews.
- Where do the reviews come from?
- They're imported from named public review sources and always shown with the source named. They aren't reviews written on MyTrustedTraders. We cross-check the same business across sources rather than creating new reviews.
- What should I check before hiring an asbestos removal?
- Confirm credentials and insurance directly with the asbestos removal, get a written quote, and run the Cowboy Checker on the business first. MyTrustedTraders helps you shortlist on the evidence. It doesn't replace your own checks before you hire.
