  • The quote should specify excavation depth, a proper compacted sub-base, edge restraints and drainage: most failed driveways are down to a skipped or shallow sub-base you cannot see once it is laid.

Warning signs of a cowboy

  • A doorstep cold-caller offering a cheap price because they have 'leftover tarmac or materials from a job nearby': this is the single most reported UK driveway scam; legitimate firms do not sell spare tarmac door to door.
  • Cash only, or a large deposit demanded before any materials arrive on site.
  • No written quote, no guarantee, and no fixed address or verifiable reviews for the business.
  • No mention of drainage or planning: paving over a front garden without considering where the rainwater goes can flood your own or a neighbour's property and breach the rules.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • How deep is the sub-base, and what edge restraints and drainage are included in the price?
  • Is the guarantee insurance-backed, and for how many years: can I see the policy?
