I had a damp survey done prior to buying my house, as the initial home buyer report flagged high readings in several areas and recommended a specialist survey. The report I was given by A S Remedial was no more than two paragraphs in a letter, saying that no high readings were detected. The implication was that there was nothing to worry about. In actual fact, two years on, the damp issues are worse than ever and I'm about to have another damp survey done by someone who I hope is going to be more thorough.

Insist they identify and fix the underlying CAUSE (a leak, blocked airbricks, poor ventilation, failed pointing) before agreeing to an injected damp-proof course, and ask them to explain why simpler fixes won't work.
Get the diagnosis and an itemised quote in writing, and be wary of pressure to sign on the spot for a long 'guarantee' that is only worth anything while that firm is still trading.
