Detailed reviews
Extremely Disappointed – Unsafe, Unprofessional, and Poor Workmanship I feel compelled to give Merlyn a one-star rating due to a series of serious issues with the kitchen installation. I am extremely angry and disappointed by the work, which was not only unprofessional but also unsafe. He taught me a lesson that cheaper is not better. His price is unbelievably low and turned out it's terrible job. I have to buy a worktop (£500 wasted) again and wasted my time and rent for this period. Below are the key reasons for my rating: 1. Terrible Worktop Finish: The worktop joints were poorly done using unmatched black silicone on a grey surface. The gaps are large, and the silicone was applied so badly that it looks like an amateur job. It's an eyesore and completely unacceptable. 2. Cabinet Doors Misaligned: Many of the cabinet doors are crooked—some are higher, some lower—clearly showing a lack of care and skill in installing the hinges properly. 3. Corner Units Ignored: He skipped the corner
3. Corner Units Ignored: He skipped the cornerstone completely and forced two cabinets into the wrong positions. As a result, the cabinet doors collide when opening and closing, which is both impractical and damaging. 4. Unsafe Wall Mounting: He claimed the walls are hollow and decided to glue the wall cabinets instead of using proper fixings. This is extremely unsafe and certainly not standard practice for any professional kitchen fitter. 5. Improper Leveling: To level one of the cabinets, he glued a stick behind it, ignoring the fact that this makes decorating or tiling the wall impossible later. 6. Ruined Worktop: He cut the worktop for the sink and hob before properly placing the cabinets or installing the cornerstone. This made it impossible to place the cornerstone afterward and rendered the entire worktop unusable. 7. Wasted Materials: He asked me to order four large boards, claiming they were needed to level the wall. In the end, he didn’t use any of them. They now take up a lot of space and were a completely unnecessary purchase. 8. Destroyed Materials: I later found that he had cut the remaining worktop into eight small pieces and thrown them away. His explanation—that he did this to “level the worktop”—makes no sense and shows a complete lack of professionalism. 9. Unprofessional Attitude: When I questioned the quality of the work, he repeatedly claimed that he was doing the job “cheaply” and “like a charity,” as if that excused the poor workmanship. This was not only unprofessional but also insulting. 10. False Promises and Manipulation: Be careful—he likes to compliment you constantly and makes grand promises to gain your trust. He talks a lot about how good he is, but the results tell a very different story. Don’t be fooled by the charm; the work simply doesn’t live up to it. 11. Broken Time Commitment: He promised to finish the job in 2 to 3 days. In reality, he spent 5 full days and still didn’t complete the work. When confronted, he claimed he had been “problem-solving” for five days—as if that justified the delay and poor results. It felt like pure excuse-making. 12. Blame-Shifting and More Wasted Time: He repeatedly blamed me for choosing a 20mm worktop, claiming it caused the worktop imbalance—something a professional should easily accommodate. He also forgot to measure the cabinet height to match the plinths, wasting another full day adjusting them. Then, unbelievably, he tried to charge me for the time lost due to his own mistake. In summary, this has been one of the worst experiences I’ve had with a tradesperson. The work is below standard, unsafe, and full of careless mistakes.
