Chris contracted the job to a different company (Weather Proof Roofing) and the work itself seems ok, however the aftercare has been appalling. There was debris left all around in both mine and my neighbour’s gardens (front and back). Also, one of the workers put a foot through my bedroom ceiling. Chris said he would make it right but he's ignored my future attempts to get hold of him. He was also rude and dismissive when I initially spoke about the issues. I've contacted the other contractor who said I need to communicate with Chris, so I've had to pay someone else to get my ceiling fixed.

They have been a nightmare to deal with and have not completed the rendering of the chimneys, even though we have paid them for the job. They ignore messages, promise to come round to finish the job and don’t turn up, turn up hours late to a site visit but will be in contact when they need money. Scaffolding has been up for 4 months but have worked on the roof for only 2 weeks. Excuses are that he has lost his phone, is so busy and the weather - even though we had the mildest, driest winter on record. Avoid like the plague - he is cheap in comparison but you will pay with the stress levels.

Whatever work they carried out to fix the roof didn't fix it at all. It is still leaking as badly as it was and they haven't come back out to sort it despite me asking them to several times.

Roofing isn't licensed, so anyone can set up - and it's a trade with more than its share of cowboys. A big re-roof must meet building regulations; CompetentRoofer (the Government-authorised NFRC scheme) registers roofers who can self-certify that, and vets and inspects them at least twice a year. Check they're on it before you hire.

Check the CompetentRoofer register
Never agree to roof work from a cold-caller at your door or an unsolicited 'we noticed your roof' note. That is the classic roofing scam.
Get a written quote that itemises access (scaffolding or a tower), the exact materials, and the workmanship guarantee, not a vague day rate.
Be wary of demands for a large cash deposit; agree staged payments against work you can actually see completed.
