- Look up their Companies House filing history: how long have they been trading, and are their accounts up to date? This sector has high insolvency rates.
- If you live in a conservation area or listed building, ask for evidence they have handled planning permission for solar in restricted areas before.
Warning signs of a cowboy
- They cannot show you a current MCS certificate: no MCS means you lose all grant entitlement and the install may be uninsurable.
- They quote unusually fast savings or promise a "government grant refund" scheme over the phone or on the doorstep: a known fraud pattern flagged by Trading Standards.
- They ask for a large deposit in cash with no written contract: the RECC/HIES consumer codes exist precisely because deposit losses are common when firms collapse.
- The company was incorporated recently (check Companies House) and is pushing you to sign quickly: new firms taking big deposits in a high-insolvency sector is a serious risk.
