  • Check they are an OZEV-approved installer (the government's Office for Zero Emission Vehicles list): it is required to claim the EV chargepoint grant for flats, rentals and workplaces, and signals an audited installer.
  • EV charging is notifiable electrical work: confirm they are a qualified electrician on a Competent Person Scheme (NICEIC or NAPIT) so they can self-certify the installation to Building Regulations Part P.
  • Look for an EV-specific qualification, such as City & Guilds 2919 (Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation), on top of the standard 18th Edition wiring regs. General electrical training alone is not enough for a safe charger install.
  • A proper installer notifies your District Network Operator (DNO) of the new load before or just after fitting: ask them to confirm they handle this, as an un-notified charger can overload the local supply.

Warning signs of a cowboy

  • Cannot show OZEV approval yet offers to 'sort the grant': only approved installers can claim it, so this is either a misunderstanding or a sign they are not who they claim.
  • No EV-specific qualification or Competent Person Scheme membership: they cannot self-certify the work and you may be left without the required compliance certificate.
  • No mention of a DNO notification, load assessment or your fuse-board capacity: fitting a 7kW charger without checking the supply is a real safety and compliance shortcut.
  • Cash only, no written quote, and pressure to fit today before you can check the chargepoint and the cable run.
